Background of the Study
Social media has become an integral part of everyday life, particularly among university students. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp offer students opportunities to engage with peers, share knowledge, and access educational resources. While social media has the potential to enhance academic engagement by providing students with a broader range of learning materials, it also poses challenges in terms of distraction, misinformation, and time management (Johnson et al., 2023).
In the context of nursing education, academic engagement refers to students’ active involvement in their studies, including participation in class discussions, collaboration with peers, and the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice (Kim & Lee, 2024). At the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, social media usage is widespread among nursing students, raising concerns about its impact on their academic engagement. While some studies have suggested that social media can support academic success by facilitating communication and access to information, others highlight its potential to distract students from their academic responsibilities (Nwaneri et al., 2023). This study aims to evaluate the influence of social media on nursing students’ academic engagement at University of Jos Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
The influence of social media on nursing students' academic engagement remains under-researched, particularly in Nigerian academic settings. At the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, nursing students frequently use social media for both academic and personal purposes. However, it is unclear whether social media usage enhances or hinders their academic engagement, especially given the potential for distraction and the overwhelming nature of digital content. Without a comprehensive evaluation, it is difficult to determine how social media affects students' academic focus, participation in learning activities, and overall academic performance.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the impact of social media on nursing students’ academic engagement at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.
2. To assess the academic benefits and drawbacks of social media usage among nursing students.
3. To identify strategies for optimizing social media use to enhance academic engagement among nursing students.
Research Questions
1. How does social media influence nursing students’ academic engagement at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital?
2. What are the benefits and challenges of using social media for academic purposes among nursing students?
3. How can nursing students optimize their social media use to improve their academic engagement?
Research Hypotheses
1. Social media usage positively influences nursing students’ academic engagement at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.
2. Nursing students who use social media for academic purposes demonstrate higher levels of academic engagement compared to those who use it primarily for personal reasons.
3. There is a significant relationship between the amount of time nursing students spend on social media and their academic engagement.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on nursing students at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and evaluates the influence of social media on their academic engagement. The results may not be generalizable to nursing students in other institutions with different social media usage patterns or academic environments. The study is also limited to assessing academic engagement, without addressing other potential impacts of social media, such as mental health or social development.
